Why Upgrade Joomla?
We know how it is – your website seems to be working exactly the same way it always has, so why touch it? Why should you have to pay money to just (seemingly) keep your website exactly as it is?
In this case, you can compare your Joomla website to a new car. It was nice and shiny when you bought it. However, a few months later it’s not stopping as quickly as it used to, there’s a strange noise coming from the exhaust and the doors are leaking. Also, there’s a newer model of your car out that parks itself now. None of these stop you from getting where you’re going, but you know if you carry on ignoring them, the day will come that you’ll turn the key and your car won’t start.
This is what is happening with Joomla. Not only are they constantly finding and fixing little errors in the code, they’re also constantly improving it to take advantage of the latest web technologies. Ignoring the security upgrades means you’re giving would-be website attackers an easy way to compromise your site. Ignoring the feature upgrades means your website’s features are falling behind your competitors.
Advantages of upgrading Joomla
- Ensure your website stays secure
- Take advantage of the latest web technologies
- Remains compatible with the underlying systems that make Joomla work (PHP + MySQL)
How 3aIT can help with your Joomla Upgrade
3aIT have been dealing with Joomla for several years, and so we are familiar with both old and new versions of Joomla. The biggest issue at the moment is upgrading sites running Joomla 1.5 to a newer version (2.5 or 3.x). There were huge changes in Joomla’s code after version 1.5, so an upgrade is almost always more complicated than pressing a couple of buttons. All 3rd party components / modules / plugins will not work with the new version of Joomla, and updated versions will need to be found (where available), or alternatives will have to be sourced where these haven’t been maintained. There were also several changes to how the page template needs to be coded, so in pretty much every case, this will need some attention.
We can review your Joomla 1.5 site and let you know what will be involved in upgrading this to a later version, and the costs that will incur.
While not quite as pressing (and usually a lot less time consuming / costly), it is still very important to keep your Joomla 2.5 / 3 sites up to date. Additionally, Joomla 2.5 hit end of life in December 2014, so ideally, you should now be on version 3, or at least planning to migrate very soon.
